Camgas Proficiency Test

(The Peter Dent Gas Chromatographer of the Year)

  Background

The annual proficiency testing program by Simtars provides the opportunity for Gas Chromatograph Operators to demonstrate ongoing competency and provide critical performance data for Gas Chromatographs used in mines. This program facilitates the selection of the "Peter Dent Gas Chromatographer of the Year" award recipient.

The Gas Chromatographer of the Year program is named after Mr Peter Dent in recognition of his contribution to Simtars and the mining industry. Peter Dent was the inaugural Director of Simtars and following the Moura No. 2 Mine disaster in 1994, led the restructuring of the Safety and Health Division and Inspectorates.  He headed the implementation of the recommendations from the Warden’s Inquiry into this disaster and held primary responsibility for introducing new mining, explosives, and gas and petroleum regulatory laws in Queensland.
  Competition Description

Each year, Simtars conducts a Camgas Users Proficiency Testing Program (round robin) competition. This initiative offers essential insights into the performance of each mine's Gas Chromatograph (GC) and enables Simtars to pinpoint potential issues within the Camgas framework. Participation in the program is available for all current GC operators and is recommended as a demonstration of ongoing competency.

The competition is structured to encourage widespread participation among mines using the Camgas system, with rewards, certificates for participation, and trophies for the winning mine. Additionally, individual and average results will be provided.

The winning coal mine worker and the mine receive a trophy to keep in recognition of their achievement. The mine's name and year are added to the perpetual trophy, which is on display at Simtars, Redbank

The competition's requirements are designed to evaluate and maintain a high standard of proficiency in GC operation and theory. By focusing on both practical skills and theoretical knowledge, the competition aims to ensure that participants are well-rounded and capable of optimising GC techniques for various applications.
