Entry requirements To enrol in this course, you must:
Note that the cost of short courses in ventilation modelling and Microsoft Excel are not included in the fees for this course, and that these courses are not run by Simtars. *Note 1: 1) “Recent” means within the past 4 years 2) “Underground role” means: a) Job is site based. Non-site based corporate roles or consulting roles etc. do not qualify. Secondments to a site (e.g. by a consultant) in which the person has an underground role will count for that period spent on site. b) While on site, the person must be underground at least twice each week c) Typical examples of acceptable roles would be: • underground worker, underground supervisor, underground safety officer or surveyor, mining engineer with some underground responsibility, e.g. drill and blast engineer, production engineer, planning engineer d) Examples of unacceptable roles would be: surface worker, mining engineer who is responsible for cost control and rarely goes underground, mining engineer in corporate office working on desktop feasibility studies e) If there is any doubt, learners must provide a detailed job description and/or keep a representative 3-month diary of their underground visits for their current role 3) Underground metalliferous mine” means a hardrock mine in which development and production is entirely or substantially using drill and blast rock breaking methods. An underground role in a civil project (e.g. tunnel construction) or softrock mine (e.g. potash or salt mine using roadheaders or continuous miners) or a coal mine will count at 50% of the required time to a maximum of 1 year. For example, someone who has worked underground in a coal mine for 2 years and in tunnel construction for 2 years would be given 1 year for the coal experience and 1 year for the tunnelling experience, but the maximum allowed from all such sources is 1 year, so that would still leave that person requiring 1 full year in an underground role in an actual underground metal mine prior to enrolment. 4) Where the individual believes they are sufficiently familiar with the underground mine environment and its equipment and processes, but does not comply with the above, they will need to set out their reasons in detail and it will be reviewed by Dr Moreby. An example might be a surface worker (e.g. in the concentrator) who has also been a member of the underground mine rescue squad for several years including being involved on many occasions in underground mine rescue drills which involves understanding the ventilation. *Note 2: These age limits apply due to age limits – to work underground and/or attend compulsory schooling – which apply in the various states and territories. 2 years has been added to those ages, due to the requirement to have at least 2 years recent experience in an underground mine. |
