This course aims to provide comprehensive training for individuals responsible for conducting respirable dust monitoring in Queensland coal, mineral mines, and quarries. Additionally, the course is relevant for persons tasked with measuring, collecting, interpreting, evaluating, and reporting workplace data related to respirable dust exposures in construction, manufacturing, and processing industries.


This course is aligned with the nationally accredited unit of competency BSBWHS419 – Contribute to implementing WHS monitoring processes and encompasses 5 eLearning modules (Assessment 1) plus online short-answers (Assessment 2) and two on-line case studies (Assessment 3 and 4)  and a 1-day face-to-face practical workshop (Assessment 5).
 


 
Key Topics
Sampling to AS 2985 - 2009 Australian standard: workplace atmospheres—a method for sampling and gravimetric determination of respirable dust.
Appropriate data to be collected during sampling, including observations.
Use and applications of real-time monitors.
Use and application of an anemometer.
Dust observation methods and best practices for underground and surface mines.


Through this course, individuals will develop the expertise needed to ensure compliance with safety regulations and promote a culture of health and safety within their workplaces.

    Course  Description   
  
This course is also applicable to those required to measure, collect, interpret, evaluate, and report on workplace information and data in relation to respirable dust exposures in construction, manufacturing, and processing industries.
 
The course consists of the following nationally accredited unit of competency:
• BSBWHS419 – Contribute to implementing WHS monitoring processes
 
As required by the Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee (CMSHAC) and the Mining Safety Healthy Advisory Committee (MSHAC) in addition to the requirements of the unit BSBWHS419, you will also be trained in the following topics:
  • sampling to AS 2985—2009 Australian standard: workplace atmospheres; method for sampling and gravimetric determination of respirable dust
  • appropriate data to be collected during sampling, including observations 
  • use and applications of real-time monitors 
  • use and application of an anemometer 
  • dust observation methods and best practices for underground mines
  • dust observation methods and best practices for surface mine
Note: While these extra topics are addressed during training, they may not be assessed as part of this course, as they are not specifically required by the unit of competency as set out in the training package.

Training

Pre-readings, Online and Face-to-Face Workshop
  • You must complete all pre-readings plus online modules prior to being accepted to participate in the one (1) day face-to-face workshop.  Please note if you are not able to complete all online modules/assessments prior to your attendance of the 1 day face-to-face workshop for the practical component you will be transferred to the next available face-to-face workshop.
  • The training methods are based on feedback from the industry, with specific topics reinforced throughout the training to ensure that dust samples are taken consistently and reported consistently, across the industry.
Trainer Assessor details
  • Your training, assessment, and/or support services will be conducted by Trainers and  Assessors who possess long-term experience and skills in working with respirable dust in numerous mines.

Assessment

  • To obtain the unit of competency, you will be required to successfully complete online modules/assessments plus written and practical assessments during the face-to-face workshop.
  • You will receive a Statement of Attainment for BSBWHS419-Contribute to implementing WHS monitoring processes from Simtars (RTO 45647) and a Statement of Completion for the additional topics covered.

Entry requirements

To enrol in this course, you must have access to a computer and be able to demonstrate that you have sufficient knowledge with at least 4 of the following:
  • Preparing and presenting logically structured reports using format and language appropriate to the audience
  • Working in a regulated environment (e.g. WHS, mining, construction etc.) where it is necessary to interpret and apply legal and technical texts
  • Working with statistical data (collecting, representing, and summarising)
  • Collaborating with others to achieve individual and team outcomes
  • Systematically following sequenced steps of procedures
  • Managing and maintaining files so as to ensure the integrity of data collected and reported
  • An understanding of hazard identification and control, including the hierarchy of controls.

Foundation skill requirements

  • To study in this course, you will be required to have core skills at level 4, or the ability to reach level 4 with support, on the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF). Simtars has questions at level 4 in Part B of the Enrolment form to assess Language, Literacy, Numeracy (LLN), and foundation skills.
  • Prior to acceptance of your enrolment, the answers to the LLN questions are reviewed by Simtars to ensure that you meet the requirements. If additional support is required this can be via your trainer or resources provided by Simtars tutorials to help you reach the required foundation skill level. To study in this course, you must provide the following materials and equipment:
  • Access to a device to enable the completion of assessment material online
  • Access to the training material 
  • Internet access
  • Enclosed Shoes (for Face to Face component of training)
  • Calculator or phone with a calculator feature


Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

  • You can apply for RPL for this unit of competency. You will need to supply information on your work history and samples of work and may need to undertake assessments and/or an interview to determine whether you have met the competency standards.
  • RPL is assessed on a case-by-case basis. You can read more about RPL in our Learner Handbook or contact us to discuss your RPL options.

Complete the Application for Enrolment form online by going to the link below: Refer to course dates below for available class dates. 
  • Simtars will acknowledge the receipt of your Application for Enrolment (PART A) via email.
  • In that same email will be further instructions to complete your Application for Enrolment (PART B).  Part B will include the Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment which confirms the level of support you require.  
  • Once Part B has been submitted and assessed for LLN, and you have been accepted to participate in the course an Invoice/Quote will be generated for payment.  
  • On receival of payment by Simtars, you will be enrolled and provided access to complete all online modules, assessments and case studies. These are to be submitted and marked no later than 5 days prior to the commencement of the practical session.
  • Simtars will generate a Confirmation of Enrolment upon approval and email it to you.  This confirmation will also contain details of the location of the course along with dates and times.
